Maybe we are not unpopular per-say exactly but the ways we operate definitely get a lot of odd looks and even step backs as most just don’t know what to do with how I respond for us. I noticed this quickly as a mom was with her children and dogs in a green area as we walked up. She says, “Oh! Are you getting ready for halloween?” directing her focus on the light strap that my child was wearing. “No. We don’t do halloween. He just likes lights.”, was my response. The woman starts to make her walk backward as if I said we were aliens and said quickly, “Well you will have a hard time in this neighborhood.” “Oh, we are just taking care of the dog here. All good.”
Yes we are the mini family that doesn’t participate in calendar holidays, says happy new year when someone starts a new year in their life and don’t do parties. We stay away from dyes in foods and minimize sugar intake, we don’t do screens and we talk about literally everything. We are devoted to God as we give thanks for each new day, meal and activity and we read the Bible daily. This is not typical for most in the world and causes some to feel uncomfortable because we do step outside the grain of the world and stand firm in faith more.
“Even Jesus celebrated holidays.”, was someone’s rebute to me once when I said, “Oh. Thanks, but we don’t really celebrate calendar holidays.” My response to such was, “Jesus celebrated Holy days and this is not one of them.” Jesus is our example and way to living a life that not only satisfies Him and our Father, it is also the best way to live. As we draw closer to Him and wanting to follow Him only, the ways of the world are easy to see and discern which ones are for us and which ones we can do without. Now, I am not saying that we will never do parties of some kind but for now it just is not something we need to worry about and does not serve us. I do know that I will do my best, God willing, to not participate in halloween ever again and to make sure my child feels empowered in our lives enough to see that it is just not something we do and that is quite alright.
Now! I want to say that this is in no way a condemnation or judgement on anyone who does this things. I am merely sharing how awkwardly people respond to us living a little differently while also maybe bringing about some awareness. I think that most just go along with things that the corporate world has said is to happen and maybe this can bring some questions on if it is actually necessary in your own life. Or… you just think I’m a weirdo and that is okay too. Either way, I appreciate your time.
