Through the various homes, things and our own belongings that I have repaired my son has come to know me as the fixer. He has helped and seen me fix a cat tower house, a dryer, chairs, yards, dishwasher panel, gates, water hose attachments, magnets, toys, garage doors, clothes and even shoes. While I think it is incredibly awesome the level of confidence my son has in me to fix everything now, there are some times when the things that he wants fixed are super tedious.
My boy is super specific about some things so when there was a little tear in his shoes that held the loop for the strap he knew it and needed it fixed and let me know about it every day until I got the sewing kit out. Then there are times when he is rough on a toy of his and it is no longer working and it gets brought to me with, “Fixit!”. Recently he brought me this little wind back car and it no longer winded back and spun out which was our giggle fit simple fun at the time. “Alright baby, let me see if I can.” as I start to asses the damage. We have had some talks about how some things just can’t be fixed, like taping crayons back together – they just don’t stay taped. Then we also have the talk about how sometimes we just have to accept that things are broken and cannot be fixed. I was pretty sure that I could get this little wind up car to operate again so I started the process of taking the tiny parts out and the frame a part, it looked super simple just put the tiny cogs back together inside the frame and all done.
This tiny project took almost half the day with a few breaks from the frustration as the pieces just were not staying in place. One time he tells me that he could do it and a couple of times we almost lost the tiniest and most important piece. Finally! After the possibility of throwing it away I looked at it again and figured the puzzle out. This tiny little car cost like ten cents and was so very important to be able to “zoom again” that as we got it to work there was celebrating and excitement that an outsider would have thought we won the lottery.
Best ten cents ever!
What is something that you fixed that was so totally worth the effort it took to do?
