Have you ever had a message of some sort be given to you three or more times by multiple outlets? I have personally come to really appreciate the deliberateness and encouragement in the necessity when something is brought to my attention multiple times. It gives me confirmation that it is something I totally need to focus on and confidence in the fact that God still speaks and wants us to be on track with Him.
“Be still and know that I AM God. I AM exalted among the nations. I AM exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10) Usually simplified to “Be still and know that I AM God.” This scripture was shared with me through two different people and then a third person gifted me a butterfly charm with that engraved on it and then it just kept being peppered in images and quick youtube shorts for about a week… Be still, He says, Know that I AM God, He declares. This is important and where I need you, I felt in my heart as my mind and being acknowledged how very on purpose each person and message was for me to take in, digest fully and grow from.
Be still. Most of us have a hard time just being present for a small five minutes without feeling the need to pick up the phone, watch something or play a game to fill what the flesh presents as a void that needs to be filled. Then add being a mama to an active boy the ability to even just be still on the toilet by yourself seems like an impossible fete and forget even thinking there can be any stillness in such a stillness in any little boy to allow deep contemplations and connections on your own… but, what if I told you that it wasn’t so much about the physical action but about something greater and the reason that the flesh battles with you so much in wanting to keep you busy is because it knows that it is the weaker contribution that needs to be tamed?
Be still. Be still and know. See these are put together on purpose because you cannot be in a knowing while allowing the lesser aspects of self and life to indulge more or most. You have to choose and come to want to know God in order to allow a stillness that isn’t actually you sitting still and being lazy but, it is about that understanding in who He is and that ultimately you don’t have real control. Yes, we have free will and choices to make that are either for self or in spirit. So… are you willing to still that part of you that wants to move past the still quiet voice that is asking that you pray or get in the Word? Are you wanting Him enough that you are willing to trust in Him and what He sees beyond the societal, worldly, human standards? After all, God made the heavens and earth and every tiny connecting detail that makes you into the form that you are and even knows the hairs on your head! (Whoa!) And you think what you know can stand up to that? No, He tells us with such love and encouragement to “be still and know” because He knows what are limits are and He knows that it is only He that is omniscient and so completely and totally able to do the real creating and life giving (or taking).
So while the world wants to focus on what you aren’t doing in regards to how you need to be doing more; God calls you to realize that it is not your doing but Him and to focus on what you are letting go of in order to draw closer to and allow from Him. Many of us have made a mess of things, myself included, by thinking that our little hands can “fix” or properly establish something for our lives when we literally rely on His breath to keep us living. I have heard a many times that there needs to be action and while I agree to some extent there are some things, most things, that need obedience in what was asked of you and to just wait a little bit before going forward with anything. Trusting and knowing who He is and that He wants the best for you.
A few days ago I did not have a way to get anywhere and I literally had to just sit around and wait and know that He was not going to let me fall. After a little bit of waiting, I was given His direction to wait until four in that afternoon and sure enough about four in that afternoon came a solution and resources. Then sitting in another pinch type scenario I was told I needed to fill out an application for a transitional housing online and I took a small moment to ask God and He said, “Just wait until you are relaxed a little bit.” I had already left a voicemail a few days prior and then a few hours after I was told to wait until I was able to thinking clearly I had a voicemail from them saying that they were at capacity and not available. God knows! He knows! and He isn’t asking us to not take action but rather to take action in the knowing of who He is and that He knows all. Yes, it takes action to make a choice and when you choose to sit in peace, knowing and consultation with the Lord Almighty, you are also choosing to quiet the flesh, distractions, worry and manipulations that the enemy so wants you to choose instead. The enemy knows that when you know God better that you also know yourself better and have greater power against him – sit with that one for a moment.
Be still. Be still and know. Be still and know God. Might be one of the most powerful actions you can take. But, you have to want it, see it and actually take it. Do you want to know what He has for you? I assure you that what He has is worth every bit of practicing of this command. Hallelujah!
